Well that’s a scary thought.
If you’ve read any of the press coverage of Chatham you’ll understand what I mean.
We get bad press that’s all I’m gonna say about that.
Don’t judge a book …
Love it or loathe it Chatham is where I live. I am one of many artists who reside here and I am proud to be part of a thriving community of creatives. We have artists of all genders, ages, height and degree of eccentricity.
Hidden women know more
I am honoured to be a member of Duende, a group of women artists who currently have an exhibition in The Halpern Gallery at Nucleus Arts in Chatham.
The group has several dowager empresses who mentor those of us who are going through the ‘difficult part in the middle’. Their friendship, support and mentorship is not only invaluable, it is inspiring and uplifting and joyous.
“The advantage of being female is that once you’re past 65, you can be a dowager empress. After the difficult part in the middle, you’re allowed to be eccentric.”
I don’t want to say too much about the exhibition because I’d prefer you to come and see for yourself. I will tell you that it’s all about ‘Hidden Women’ - great achievers in history that happened to be born female, often in a time when the only aspiration for women was to be a dutiful wife and mother. These women broke the mould, and even if they achieved some degree of recognition during their lifetimes, they have largely been forgotten. We are bringing their stories back into the public eye through painting, pottery, photography, clothing and much more.
‘Hidden Women’ 7th-19th October.
Local musician, Selah Roots, just happened to be walking by and I invited him into the gallery before we opened to the public. Did he like what he saw? The Halpern Gallery, Chatham, kent
